ABP Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management (Level 7)

 

ABP Postgraduate qualifications are designed to meet a range of different needs. ABP Postgraduate qualifications offer:

The qualifications provide a strong emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding. ABP Postgraduate qualifications are particularly suitable for more mature learners who wish to follow a programme of study that is directly related to their work experience or to an aspect of employment that they wish to move into. On successful completion of an ABP Postgraduate qualification, it is possible for learners to progress into or within employment and/or continue their study in the vocational area. In many cases, learners can progress to Masters Degrees.

Learners studying for the ABP Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management will be expected to develop the following higher-level skills during the programme of study:

  • systematic understanding of knowledge and a critical awareness of current problems and new insights, much of which is at the forefront of the professional area of management
  • comprehensive understanding of management techniques and ability to apply
  • originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the area of management
  • critical evaluation of current research and advanced scholarship in the area of Management
  • the ability to develop and apply novel approaches in handling complex and unpredictable situations
  • the ability to operate effectively in highly critical situations by dealing effectively with problems and employing a high level of skill, judgment and insight
  • the ability to respond to change and initiate change
  • the ability to deal with complex issues creatively yet systematically, make sound judgments and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences

Structure of the qualification

 

The ABP Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management comprises five mandatory units. Each unit comprises 180 hours of learning. To achieve this qualification, a learner must successfully complete all five units as mentioned below:

Organizational Resource Management

  • Critically evaluate, appraise and analyze the management of human resources to aid the development of business strategy within an organization
  • Critically evaluate strategies for people recruitment, retention, training, learning and development which maximize the skills and contributions of people.
  • Critically appraise strategies for positive employee relations, performance management and reward.
  • Understand and critically appraise the importance of marketing within the development of business plans and strategies.
  • Evaluate and analyze the processes of market development in a dynamic business environment.
  • Evaluate and analyze the linkages between marketing and operations in manufacturing, service and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Critically evaluate, appraise and analyze the place of information systems and new technologies in developing business and marketing strategies and planning.

Management of Financial Resources and Performance

  • Critically consider the impact that resource decisions have both internally and externally on an organization’s performance and effectiveness.
  • Critically evaluate, appraise and analyze financial data, techniques and tools to aid decision-making in business strategy and planning.
  • Evaluate, appraise and analyze international aspects of financial strategy Indicative content:
  • Identify and critically assess the management and performance of tangible and intangible resources in business strategy and planning.
  • Critically evaluate and appraise contemporary management accounting methodology to support the effective management and control of resources.
  • Analyze the risks attached to environmental change, the consequences and appropriate responses.
  • Critically appraise the importance of communication for information providers in organizations and appraise and develop your own communication skills

Leadership and Change Management

  • Critically evaluate historical, classical and contemporary approaches to leadership theory.
  • Determine leadership approaches relevant for the 21st century, drawing on theories and tools as practised by leading international organizations.
  • Explore and examine your own personal and managerial effectiveness within an organization through a process of personal reflection.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the principles of change and the organizational change process.
  • Critically appraise change theories, tools and techniques.
  • Critically appraise the implementation of the change process including resistance to change and practical management aspects.
  • Develop the student’s ability to act as a change agent within an organization
  • Understand and appraise the need to integrate the management of change with other business and management disciplines.

Corporate Management in Action

  • Analyze the international business environment and the development of global organizations.
  • Identify those actions that determine whether an organization survives, prospers or dies.
  • Critically analyze given organizations to identify hard and soft system factors that impact upon success and failure in the development and implementation of a business plan
  • Integrate knowledge and understanding of an organization’s external business environment, its management and leadership potential and its ability to change and to develop and implement a business strategy, for a given organization.
  • Critically appraise the effect of changes in corporate governance on an organization.
  • Appraise the effect of a move to ethical management on organizations.
  • Monitor implemented strategies and plans

 

 

Entry requirements:

 A degree in a related subject eg Business or Management. Candidates having A Level or its equivalent Higher Secondary or Intermediate level qualification with a minimum of two years work experience (paid or unpaid) in a management position can apply. Candidates should be 21 years or above.

 

English language proficiency requirement- an overall IELTS score of 5.5.

 

Course Duration:

The course duration is one year.

 

Assessment:

This PGD programme is assessed by a mixture of assignments and examinations.
